The NCAA rules committee recommended that the Playing Rules Oversight Panel implement a restricted area underneath the basket that limits additional defenders from crowding the basket unless they are guarding an opponent. The rules committee also recommended encouraging officials to use TV monitors more liberally when determining the severity of a foul.

South Carolina: Carter to Look for More Playing Time
South Carolina junior center Mitchell Carter will transfer to another school that he hopes will give him more playing time in his final year of eligibility. Carter averaged 1.1 points and 0.6 rebounds in 4.3 minutes per game.
San Francisco: Russell Teammate Dies
Former San Francisco player Hal Perry, 75, died May 5 after a long battle with illness. He was a teammate of Bill Russell and K.C. Jones in the 1950s when the Dons won back-to-back national titles.
North Carolina: Obama to Host National Champs
The North Carolina Tar Heels will visit President Barack Obama at the White House May 11 as the president honors the national champions. North Carolina beat Michigan State 89-72 in the championship game. Obama received a lot of attention for picking North Carolina to win the championship.
Tulsa: Bawji Leaves Golden Hurricanes
Tulsa freshman forward Bassel Bawji has decided to transfer to another school. In one season with the Golden Hurricanes, Bawji played in only 14 games, averaging 0.6 points in 2.4 minutes per game.
Tennessee State: Two Tigers Depart Team
Tennessee State will lose two players, including leading scorer Gerald Robinson Jr., after the team granted scholarship releases to Robinson and freshman guard Parker Smith. Robinson, a sophomore guard, was the Tigers’ best offensive weapon, averaging 17.8 points per game.
USC: Two Trojans Leave the Team
USC will lose two more players from last season’s team as sophomore Donte Smith and freshman Mamadou Diarra have decided to leave the team. Smith, who averaged 2.3 points per game this past season, has decided to transfer to Division II Cal State San Bernardino. Diarra, who averaged 0.7 points per game this past season, left the team because he plans to play professionally in France.
Oregon House Wants Teams to Interview Minority Candidates
The Oregon House of Representatives passed a bill May 1 that would require state universities to interview minority candidates for coaching and athletic director positions. The House members supported the measure 42-4, and the bill moves to the Oregon Senate for consideration.
Cal Poly: Callero Brings Two Seattle Assistants to the Mustangs
New Cal Poly coach Joe Callero has hired Mitch Freeman and Mitch Reaves to join his staff with the Mustangs. Both Freeman and Reaves worked with Callero at Seattle.
Drake: Former Catamount Lands With Bulldogs
Former Vermont freshman forward Jordan Clarke has chosen to play for Drake, starting in 2010-11. He averaged 1.4 points and 1.6 rebounds per game this past season for the Catamounts.
