Minnesota: Smith and University Sued by Would-be Gopher Assistant
Jimmy Williams has filed lawsuits against Minnesota and Golden Gophers coach Tubby Smith after he was denied an assistant coaching position in 2007.
Arizona: State to Make Miller Well Paid
Arizona’s Board of Regents approved the incentive-laden contract of new coach Sean Miller. Miller will receive $1.6 million a year for five years.
Clemson: Purnell Earns Another Extension
An Associated Press report states that Clemson coach Oliver Purnell has agreed to stay with the Tigers through 2016. Purnell will sign a two-year extension that will boost his salary from $50,000 a year to $275,000.
Akron: Zips Extend Dambrot’s Contract
Akron coach Keith Dambrot received a two-year contract extension, a deal which will keep him on the Zips’ sidelines through 2016. Dambrot has a 115-51 record in five seasons at Akron, making the program one of the winningest ones during that span.
UCLA: Gordon Goes Down at USA Tryouts
According to a UCLA release, an attempt to be patriotic went wrong as sophomore Drew Gordon partially tore a tendon in his right knee at the 2009 USA Basketball Under-19 World Championship Team Trials in Colorado Springs, Colo. Gordon averaged 3.6 points and 3.4 rebounds per game last season.
BYU: Rose Diagnosed With Pancreatic Cancer
After undergoing surgery in early June to stop internal bleeding, BYU coach Dave Rose received word from doctors that he has pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor cancer.

Colorado State: Rams Add Former Gopher
Colorado State coach Tim Miles announced that the Rams have added forward Travis Busch to their roster. Busch graduated from Minnesota in May but has one remaining year of eligibility.
