Conference Notes
West Coast: Toreros and Waves Win Tight Games
No. 6 Pepperdine and No. 7 San Francisco wrapped up Friday’s action with a 93-85 thriller. No. 5 San Diego got some luck to beat No. 8 Loyola Marymount 62-56.
Von Rosenberg, Turner lead Hawks to Tournament Opening Victory
Jaret von Rosenberg hit every shot down the stretch, and Michael Turner stepped in the way of a game tying three, as Hartford’s seniors refused to go quietly into that good night. Turner played gritty, stifling defense, and von Rosenberg scored 21 points, as the seniors put the Hawks on their backs and carried them to a 65-56 victory of Maine in Friday nights “play in” game of the America East tournament.
Cole Outduels Mayo as Cleveland State Ousts UIC
Tonight’s second Horizon League quarterfinal game between No. 3 Cleveland State and No.7 Illinois-Chicago turned into a shootout between UIC’s all-league senior and conference second leading scorer Josh Mayo, and theViking’s budding star sophomore guard Norris Cole.
Sights and Sounds at the Horizon League Tournament
Hinkle Fieldhouse is known for the venue where the big game in the movie Hoosiers was played but this court and fieldhouse has seen all kinds of history. For starters almost every major player from the Midwest has played here. Oscar Robertson played high school games here, Steve Alford once scored 50 points in a high school game at Hinkle. Cazzie Russell came in with Michigan to play Butler. You can’t forget Larry Bird playing here in high school and college. Maybe the most amazing thing is they still use the original court.
Florida State: Seminoles Face Four-Year Probation and Sanctions
The NCAA has just announced a sweeping four-year probation sentence for Florida State University Seminole athletics, encompassing ten varsity sports. While lauded for cooperating with NCAA investigators, the school-recommended two-year probation sentence was doubled, and additional penalties were levied.
America East: Hawks End 14-Game Losing Streak
No. 9 Hartford beat No. 8 Maine 65-56 to win its first game since Jan. 14, when the Hawks beat the Black Bears by five.
Colonial: CAA Tourney With 2 Wins by the Favorites
No. 8 Georgia State took out No. 9 Delaware 54-41, and No. 5 Hofstra swept away No. 12 UNC-Wilmington 79-66.
Metro Atlantic: Lower Seeds Beat Offensively Challenged Favorites
No. 8 Loyola, Md., failed to score more than seven points during a total of 16 minutes, allowing No. 9 Canisius to move forward to the quarterfinals. In the second game, Marist won an ugly game in which neither team shot better 36 percent from the field.
Missouri Valley: Creighton Needs a Buzzer-Beater to Beat the Shockers
All four favorites won in the quarterfinals of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. However, Northern Iowa needed to overcome a six-point deficit in the final 10 minutes, and Creighton exemplified the thrills of March Madness with a buzzer-beating game-winner to slip past Wichita State 63-62.
