The Pac-12 appears to be hyper-competitive, but after its schools’ non-conference showing, is that a good thing? Plus two teams stand out early in the Horizon, surprising results in two other leagues, and a couple of Big Ten teams take personnel hits.
Wichita State and Cincinnati were poised to be the hottest things going in the American Athletic Conference this year, and both have generally delivered early in the season, if going through minor hiccups. Who else is going to join them at the top? Is it possible it could be…Tulane?
While a freshman point guard has put up a lot of big games and did so again on Wednesday, the night belonged to a younger, smaller and lesser-known guard. Plus there’s a new all-time wins leader in South Bend, and a couple of surprise conference starts continue in the Midwest.
More early impressions are being formed as conference play continues, especially in the SEC and Big Ten. Plus a big road win in the Big 12, a big blow to the Fighting Irish, and a good coach gets in the news for a bad reason once again.

As the calendar turns over, some early conference play has told us a few things about playing at home and with a couple of surprises. Plus more injury news hits the Big Ten, some of it good and some of it not good.
Saturday included 14 ranked teams in action, including a trio of games matching two ranked squads. Three ranked teams were knocked off by unranked, and three more very nearly were. Number One went down. In the end, though, the biggest storyline were the undefeated teams. Specifically, the day started with three. By the end there were none.
Friday showed us that one team many expected to be a national title contender looks like anything but. Plus the Jayhawks don’t look so vulnerable on the road, a stunner in the Sun Belt, and a conference changes its replay setup.
It took just one round of Big East play for us to be reminded again just how beautiful double round-robin conference schedules are.
A very unproven team nearly won its conference opener on a big stage, but blew it. Plus more road teams win in one conference opening night, we now know why a Wolfpack guard is suspended, and a long-time great coach will get his due.
