The NCAA has notified Arkansas that the Razorbacks are in danger of losing a scholarship if they don’t improve their ability to keep players eligible and guide them to graduation.

New Elon coach Matt Matheny has hired Tim Sweeney to join his staff with the Phoenix. Most recently an assistant at Bucknell, Sweeney knows the Southern Conference after working at Davidson for two seasons.

Davidson coach Bob McKillop hired Landry Kosmalski as an assistant coach, giving Kosmalski a second tour of duty on the Wildcats’ bench. He worked with McKillop from 2004 to 2006 and helped guide the team to a 43-20 record.

Montana coach Wayne Tinkle has hired Freddie Owens as an assistant coach. Owens will be working on his first Division I assistant job.

Kentucky coach John Calipari continues to stockpile the talent in his new digs in Lexington with the addition of guard Eric Bledsoe. The Alabama point guard is the No. 22 overall recruit according to Rivals.com.

For next season, Mississippi State is now only one scholarship over the limit of 13 after junior forward Jacquiese Holcombe announced that he will transfer. He averaged 3.0 points and 2.0 rebounds in 11.9 minutes per game.

The NCAA rules committee recommended that the Playing Rules Oversight Panel implement a restricted area underneath the basket that limits additional defenders from crowding the basket unless they are guarding an opponent. The rules committee also recommended encouraging officials to use TV monitors more liberally when determining the severity of a foul.

South Carolina junior center Mitchell Carter will transfer to another school that he hopes will give him more playing time in his final year of eligibility. Carter averaged 1.1 points and 0.6 rebounds in 4.3 minutes per game.

Former San Francisco player Hal Perry, 75, died May 5 after a long battle with illness. He was a teammate of Bill Russell and K.C. Jones in the 1950s when the Dons won back-to-back national titles.

The North Carolina Tar Heels will visit President Barack Obama at the White House May 11 as the president honors the national champions. North Carolina beat Michigan State 89-72 in the championship game. Obama received a lot of attention for picking North Carolina to win the championship.
