Early in its Division I days, UMass-Lowell got blitzed and never was in the game at Boston University. In the beginning of their transition to play Division I, a game like this likely won’t happen often but could, and so go some of the growing pains with the process.
Hartford shows a mixed bag of maturity in season opener
Hartford’s core has been together for a couple of seasons and is experienced for a group of juniors. In their season opener, they looked at times like a team that knows how to respond to in-game adversity and others like a team that has a good deal of growth still needed.
BC didn’t quite play like the veteran team they are in loss
Boston College is now a very experienced team, especially for having just one senior on the roster. But the Eagles didn’t quite play like one on Friday night, yet they still had a chance for a nice win to start the season that would have shelf life later in the season.
URI will be improved but something of a mixed bag for now
Year two under Dan Hurley is now here at Rhode Island, and the Rams will certainly be improved. Just how much better remains to be seen, although there is potential for the improvement to be more than significant.

How UNC plays without Hairston will shape their season
North Carolina will be without P.J. Hairston for some games this season. That much is known. How it affects their season remains to be seen, but while they won’t be as good without him there will be opportunity in those early games.

New Big East not off to the most auspicious start
Although it will surely be forgotten before too long, especially once basketball starts, the new-look Big East isn’t off to the most auspicious start in its early days. A slow hiring process and a surprising departure are all behind it.
