Long Island came to Connecticut without a win on the season, but emerged with their first two that included a Springfield Bracket title in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic.

Princeton gets first win, shows room for improvement
In getting the first win of the season and the first career win for head coach Mitch Henderson, Princeton certainly did some things well on Saturday. But there was also plenty to take away for future work from their 61-53 win over Buffalo that wasn’t as close as the final score indicated.
For UMass, having a point guard is making a difference
For much of his tenure at his alma mater, Derek Kellogg has lacked a true point guard. Now he has one, and thus far it seems to be making a noticeable difference for his UMass team.
Providence tries a different role for Gerard Coleman
There are some important things about this Providence team that are different from last season, not the least of which is the coaching staff. One noteworthy change is that a key player will be coming off the bench, and if their first two games are any indication, the early returns are positive with Gerard Coleman moving out of the starting lineup.
Northeastern’s frontcourt looks much better already
One reason Northeastern is a hard team to project this season is the frontcourt. If first impressions are worth anything, though, the Huskies may be a team we can project more favorably.
Quick Hitters – November 11, 2011
A few quick notes as the college basketball season begins, with thoughts on young St. John’s winning two out of the gate, George Mason’s point guard situation, intriguing early matchups and an under-the-radar commitment.
Providence Has New Coach But Same Old Players
As Providence College enters the 2011-12 season, there’s a tale of the new and the old. The new is reason for optimism, the old is reason for patience if you’re a Friar fan, and there was a little more of the old on Saturday as the Friars narrowly escaped their second exhibition game with a 76-75 win over a UMass-Lowell team that projects to be one of the best in Division II.
Reaching the Postseason Again Will be a Tall Order for URI
Rhode Island has been a consistent postseason team in recent years and a fairly solid upper-half team in the Atlantic 10 during that stretch. If they are to continue that this season, a lot of unknowns need to become known, and in a positive manner.
Lots of Learning Ahead in the CAA
Trying to predict the order of finish in the CAA, as well as a preseason all-conference team and Player of the Year was an exercise in futility this time around. There is plenty of talent, but a lot of it is unproven at the college level, so we’ll be learning a lot about the conference this season.
Quick Hitters – July 6, 2011
