Sometimes in college basketball, comebacks happen so fast and so suddenly that it’s literally as if a storm blew through, and a game seemingly in hand suddenly has slipped away. SMU was the victim in such a scenario in its NCAA Tournament loss to UCLA in March; last night, the Mustangs returned the favor.
With conference play in full swing, some teams have more work to do regarding their NCAA Tournament hopes than others.
One of what may turn out to be the games of the year in the Missouri Valley took place last night. And now, with one its back pocket, Wichita State gets ready for what may be another one.
It’s way, way too early in the season to be counting anyone out, and that lesson was given on more than a few occasions Tuesday night.
Polls do matter. A case could be made that the All-America first team is already wrapped up right now. And it’s not at all hard to envision Oklahoma and Kansas playing two or three more times this year, including perhaps again in April.
The Pac-12 had another busy day and shows clear strength – and balance. Plus another close ACC opener and a key guard may be done for the season ahead of a clash of the titans matchup.
Almost certainly now, Monday night will bring us a matchup between No. 1 and No. 2. And we won’t even have to wait a week to see it.
