With the Maui Invitational, Kris Dunn, Ben Simmons and a renewal of an old Big 8 rivalry, Monday night saw a number of heavy hitters in action. Incredibly, though, a school that has never been a household name just keeps forcing itself into the national conversation, too.
Duke and Georgetown battled in a terrific 2K Classic championship game. The Blue Devils came away the winner in a game that was well-played overall.
For the second straight year, one of the hottest teams to start the season is Miami (Fla.). The goal this year for the Hurricanes is to write a new ending to the same beginning script.
It was a historic – and almost perfect – day for a 109-year-old conference, plus a coach is not happy with the NCAA and a light day of tournament action ahead of one full of championship games.
Early tournaments are in full swing, and on Friday we had a big win for a team with a new coach, a surprise that wasn’t a surprise, and some good matchups set for Sunday in a couple of them.
Though still a week from Thanksgiving Day, the holiday tournament season really began yesterday, and the results from the first two events were a good sampling of the first week of the 2015-16 season as a whole.
An otherwise non-descript non-conference game in mid-November included one of the more tantalizing-and enjoyable-scenes we will see all of this college basketball season.
Seton Hall started the season with a weekend homestand, and took full advantage by winning both games. Some thoughts from the two games follows.
You can go a long time in this college basketball season and not have a better day of games than Tuesday provided, as the day was loaded with power matchups, revivals of rivalries, and just plain good games that were worthy of the national platforms they were provided, even if played at times that were the furthest thing from prime time.
Contrary to prevailing wisdom for some, George Washington’s win over Virginia Monday was a win for both teams-and for college basketball.
