The NCAA’s changes to allow time in June for players to be evaluated with their school teams was well-intentioned, but reality is a little more complicated. Plus a light night of game action, a heart procedure appears to have gone well, and a longer deal for a coach in North Carolina.
There was plenty of drama and a lot of good basketball, and in the end the ACC/Big Ten Challenge ended up even. Plus Big East teams add wins, a Bonnie is finally back in action, and a couple of monster games with teams on opposite ends of the bottom line.
As the fun of in-season tournaments largely comes to an end, it’s a great day for one particular conference. Plus one team that beat the champs keeps winning, as does a team that has had some potential and might be ready to turn a corner again.
With two championship games on tap, one was won by a team that needed it and another was not. Plus the tournaments continue with some entertaining games out west, a captain will move on, and another big pickup for a new head coach.
Just a few years after realignment changed the Big East immensely, the conference put forth a terrific season all the way around, and looks to be in great shape. A national champion led the way, but there is much more behind them.
The 2018 NCAA Tournament selections demonstrated once again that the selection committee seems to have lost sight of what should be the most basic, important thing to ask of teams: winning games.
It’s not the case every year, but once again, the term ‘soft bubble’ is perfectly appropriate this year as NCAA tourney selection beckons.
The New York City area played host to two tournaments with quarterfinal action, and the subway allowed for travel to see two games in the Big East Tournament and two games of the ACC Tournament.
The Southeastern Conference is almost certainly on the precipice of a banner year for NCAA Tournament berths. Just which of those teams will receive them, though, and what might happen with them when they get there, will continue to be a mystery of the wildest proportions.
In a season of parity, Saturday was just another day, loaded with happenings and surprises.
