Once again another highly ranked team had some trouble on the road this week, with Gonzaga only pulling away from Loyola Marymount in the final minutes. Plus: the Murray State/Austin Peay rivalry is back, and some superb individual performances in the Big Sky, CAA and Summit League.
A Saturday full of showdown games had one that was especially decisive, though we throw a little caution flag on their ceiling. Plus the early top 16 seeds are revealed, a Bulldog likely down for the rest of the season, and an AD voices his support – but what does it really mean?
Wofford is going to be a much-discussed team between now and March, but a look at the entire resume-not just Quadrant 1-should say surefire NCAA tourney team. The Terriers also won a dandy in overtime Thursday night at East Tennessee State. Plus: buzzer beaters galore.
UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara played a late-night dandy reminiscent of Big West games of the past. Also, Houston quietly keeps winning, Carsen Edwards helps Purdue escape and some huge scoring performances in Conference USA.
Cassius Winston showed why he’s a midseason All-American, leading Michigan State as it stopped Nebraska’s 20-game home winning streak. Hofstra also keeps its streak going, plenty of excitement in the OVC, WCC and Conference USA, another coach ejected and more.
A busy day saw a few great games that were expected to be just that, including one out west that tells us who still rules that conference. Plus a Blue Devil was seeing double, a key player is lost for the season in the Big 12, and a few officials earn a suspension.
Steve Alford’s firing at UCLA was no surprise. That still doesn’t make it right in the middle of a season.
In our latest podcast, we have a lot on the Big Ten since they had some early conference games, then some caution with Kansas, St. John’s with a big start, and wonder what happened to Texas since they ran off to a great start against Michigan State.
Texas has now lost three straight and will be challenged to reverse course quickly. Plus a feel-good story in the Big Ten, a close call in Philadelphia, a triple-double in Chicago, and a great game to close out the night.
For the second straight night, a mid-major pulls off their second win of the young season over a Power 5 school. Also, another big game from a Golden Eagle who’s done it before, a tough loss that could have been a win for the Cardinal, and more early Big Ten games get played.
