A triple-overtime game between Quinnipiac and Siena in the MAAC between two of many teams battling for the top had a pair of individual offensive eruptions on Sunday. Also, Missouri State’s remarkable in-season improvement, St. John’s with a stunning rally and Michigan State dominates second half against Ohio State.
Once again another highly ranked team had some trouble on the road this week, with Gonzaga only pulling away from Loyola Marymount in the final minutes. Plus: the Murray State/Austin Peay rivalry is back, and some superb individual performances in the Big Sky, CAA and Summit League.
The big showdown of the day was one where the winning team kept a great story of unexpected success going. Plus last-second finishes in the Big Ten, a bigger lead in the Valley, and a very tight race in a conference known for its competitiveness.
Wofford is going to be a much-discussed team between now and March, but a look at the entire resume-not just Quadrant 1-should say surefire NCAA tourney team. The Terriers also won a dandy in overtime Thursday night at East Tennessee State. Plus: buzzer beaters galore.
UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara played a late-night dandy reminiscent of Big West games of the past. Also, Houston quietly keeps winning, Carsen Edwards helps Purdue escape and some huge scoring performances in Conference USA.
On Sunday, Purdue just further showed that they’re in the ballpark of where many thought they would be before the season. Plus a two-team race is emerging in one conference, and the stage has been set for an upcoming showdown between undefeated teams in another conference.
