So much for any talk about one team possibly going undefeated, and given that their conference is better than some think despite its downward trend, there are teams capable of beating them anyway. Plus no surprises in one big conference, while it was a good day to be a road team in another, and a mild surprise in an academic league opener.
As conference play gets going, the Big 12 stands out on its opening night with some road wins. Plus an old Big East power starts off well while another has to rally, two undefeated teams carry on, and a Tar Heel is out for a little time.
Saturday was a wild day full of Power 5 teams losing to mid-majors, with one struggling conference being the worst offender. Plus a rivalry game tells us something about the winner, a big man returns to action, and one undefeated team falls at the buzzer while another one beats a good road team.
In our latest podcast, we talk about Arizona State’s win over Kansas and how the Sun Devils have carried the flag for a struggling Pac-12, as well as a couple of hot seats out west, a great coaching job in Texas, and a wide-open race for a major honor.
Kansas played its first true road game of the season Saturday night at Arizona State. It shouldn’t be much of a surprise that the Jayhawks lost. Plus, Saturday’s top individual performances including a unique double-double by Old Dominion’s Aaron Carver and ETSU wins the venerable Sun Bowl Invitational:
Yes, that is correct: Buffalo won at Syracuse, and it was not an upset. Plus a newly revived rivalry has some gasoline thrown on it, more in the saga of a fired Husky alum and coach, and a Wildcat will be out for a lot of conference play.
After Saturday’s loss, what do we make of Kentucky at this point given that they have lost to their toughest opponents while beating up on worse teams? Plus lots of rivalry games were on tap, while one school couldn’t travel for their game and saw it canceled.
In our latest podcast, we have a lot on the Big Ten since they had some early conference games, then some caution with Kansas, St. John’s with a big start, and wonder what happened to Texas since they ran off to a great start against Michigan State.
The Jimmy V Classic was another good doubleheader, with the second game telling us more about one team and its growing pains than the other. Plus one team brings a four-game losing streak into a long final exam break, another loses a big man, and blowing a big lead and losing the game makes it a bad loss.
For the second straight night, a mid-major pulls off their second win of the young season over a Power 5 school. Also, another big game from a Golden Eagle who’s done it before, a tough loss that could have been a win for the Cardinal, and more early Big Ten games get played.
