It appeared Thursday night was going to offer us yet another instance of a top-ranked team losing this season when Virginia looked on its way to a sure loss at Louisville Thursday night. The Cavaliers trailed by four points, and there was less than one second left on the clock. No problem. All it took was two made free throws, a travel on the baseline by a Cardinals player inbounding the ball, and then a banked in three-pointer at the buzzer.

We may not be in March just yet, but there’s no better notice that it’s just around the corner than the first college hoops conference tournament tipping off. The Atlantic Sun sat in the pole position for this season, the first of 32 tournaments to get underway Monday night already, nearly two weeks before Selection Sunday.

Almost as infuriating on Monday as a deserving championship contender being kept from a real shot at a national title solely because of collusion is how so many networks covering college basketball continue to run away from a prime opportunity to do something different on that night.

The Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament opened Thursday in Brooklyn, N.Y., under the guise of another money grab, er, “expanding its ‘brand.’” And while the meat of the event is still to come starting today, the early rounds still featured teams presumably playing for their NCAA Tournament lives. And all of them have lost already.
