With the college basketball season building up to its crescendo next month, we should be focusing on the teams and players and how well they’re playing. Instead, we’ve had a run of injuries and illness of late, and it continued on Saturday:

For a half last night in its game against Georgia, Arkansas was looking like same old Arkansas on the road, but in the second half the Razorbacks battled back on the road and got a big 79-75 win at Georgia.

“Anybody can beat anybody” is a cliché. It’s also being proven on a regular basis early in this college basketball season. The upsets keep coming this year, and if there’s one thing we’re learning early this college basketball season, it is that you cannot take anyone lightly. That seems to go especially for NCAA Division I newcomers and transitional members.

A prevailing theme over the last week or so of college basketball games has been resilience. Just when some may have thought they were down and maybe even wanted to count them out on various levels, a number of teams have made some real statements in the past week in their next games following poor performances. We saw it again Monday night as Florida played easily its best game of the year to rout Yale 85-47.

LaDontae Henton had a career game on Sunday, and fortunately for him and his Providence teammates, this one was a little different from the last time that happened.

The Big East is getting by just fine. Here is how good the Big East has been so far this year: nine of its 10 teams are so far undefeated. Villanova is 5-0. So are Providence and Creighton. Xavier and Seton Hall are 4-0. Georgetown, St. John’s and Butler are 3-0. Shoot, even DePaul is 2-0.
