Regular season titles should matter more than they will to committee
Arkansas-Little Rock, San Diego State, Tennessee-Chattanooga, Valparaiso, Wichita State. All five share a lot in common as teams who are highly questionable to receive bids to this year’s NCAA tourney if they don’t win their conference tournaments. Those five also share something else in common, though: all will finish the season as sole, undisputed champions of conferences that play a double round-robin schedule.

Even acknowledging that it took some time for the Badgers to find their way under him (remember, the team was 2-4 in his first six games), what Greg Gard has done righting a previously middling team at Wisconsin deserves serious notice, to the point where it’s hard to imagine many others could’ve done it better this year.

Like so many conference foes now, Indiana and Michigan are more acquaintances than consistently fierce rivals, the product of today’s bloated leagues where yearly home-and-homes are no longer a given. Still, their only meeting this year looked juicy on paper, matching one top 25 team and another not far from it.

If there was any temptation to dismiss the NCAA Tournament chances of Georgetown, North Carolina State and UNLV, all three provided reasons Tuesday why you shouldn’t do that yet. The night was emblematic of this never-count-a-team-out season, as these perennial NCAA Tournament contenders earned unlikely victories.

Clemson has a good coach in Brad Brownell, has had him for six years in fact. Brownell won big at previous jobs at UNC-Wilmington and Wright State and has won nearly 62% of games in his career. Still, the sad truth is many might consider Brownell lucky to still be the coach at Clemson.
