The first day of action in the Maui Invitational didn’t quite start off as expected, but that might help in a year where it may be surpassed in terms of having the best field. Plus more tournament action includes one championship, a program first in Richmond, and a Hawkeye is done for the season.
Opening night was as good as advertised, led by the big doubleheader in New York where the nightcap belonged to one freshman in particular. Plus a few road wins lead some close ones, a couple of mild surprises, and some major league blowouts with non-Division I schools.
The national championship game ahead of us is a matchup of two teams with a story of how they got here from a year ago that we should appreciate. Plus the women decide their champion, a Big Ten star is off to the NBA, and more coaching moves.

Virginia slowly pulled away from Virginia Tech in the second half on the road Monday night, doing so in a most Virginia-like way, slowly and in a most satisfying way for the winners. Also, Kansas State takes care of business on the road, and TCU’s NCAA tourney chances running into trouble.
Louisville continued its peculiar and long-running domination of Virginia Tech. Iowa State also stayed in the thick of the Big 12 race, Texas Tech took a liking to Monday again, and a huge performance in the Patriot League by a Colgate junior.
