With the Maui Invitational, Kris Dunn, Ben Simmons and a renewal of an old Big 8 rivalry, Monday night saw a number of heavy hitters in action. Incredibly, though, a school that has never been a household name just keeps forcing itself into the national conversation, too.
It was a quiet day in terms of final scores, but a rivalry game included a scary injury, one team could have taken the second half off on Sunday, and an Ivy League contender suffers a key loss.
An ACC team that used to be a national power is trying to get back there, and had a good day on Sunday. Plus a busy day for Pac-12 bubble teams, some relief about an Aztec’s health, and Memphis may lose a key player the rest of the way.
When seeing the game’s score flash today for the first time, the first thought regarding a Louisville/North Carolina game was “wow, that’s a terrific non-conference game, especially in January.”
Doubleheaders at Madison Square Garden are as much a part of the fabric of college basketball as the ball itself or Bill Raftery. There is nothing better, and only a few things that even compare.
The ACC wasn’t exactly the powerhouse conference many thought it would be in 2013-14. Will that be the case when expectations rise further next year?
A look back at the 2011-12 season in the ACC, one with good but not great results and a few teams that had unexpected finishes in the NCAA Tournament.
Although it wasn’t quite as bad as last season, this was hardly one for the books for Wake Forest. After an 82-60 blowout loss against Maryland on Thursday, the Demon Deacons finished 13-18 overall. That doesn’t seem so bad, and a few teams had worse records, but look deeper and you see a team that, quite simply, was not good.
Wake Forest’s 71-56 win at Boston College on Saturday won’t make national headlines at all. But the Demon Deacons are fresh off a bad year and in the midst of one with a lot of ups and downs, so they’re not about to downplay what this win means for them.
Last season turned pretty ugly for the Demon Deacons, and Wake Forest will try to climb out of the basement in 2011-12.
