Of all the teams near the top of the rankings-scratch that, in the top 25 rankings at all-Cincinnati has been the mystery team of this season. And while the Bearcats will still be that for some time for many, they at least should have answered some questions Wednesday night.
The Big 12 and SEC once again provided a nice jolt to the late January college hoops schedule with their annual challenge event, but this year’s was notable for and different from other previous ones for several reasons.
There just might be a team finally ready to break free of the mass of sameness in the Missouri Valley, as Loyola Chicago took hold of first place at the halfway mark in resounding fashion Wednesday night in a battle for first at Drake.
A very unproven team nearly won its conference opener on a big stage, but blew it. Plus more road teams win in one conference opening night, we now know why a Wolfpack guard is suspended, and a long-time great coach will get his due.
There was no college basketball on Tuesday and the day after Christmas, and the NCAA Division I schedule is still mostly light for tonight as many take their time wading back into play after a brief holiday break.
The Mountain West was a little better this season, though not as good as a few years back. It was, however, a fun conference to watch, as little went as predicted.
On a night where two champions were crowned, a shocking development came in the women’s tournament. Plus more coaching changes, including a late one, and a conference change could be coming.
The break in the NCAA Tournament from the regionals to the Final Four allows plenty of room for other NCAA Division I college basketball tournaments to get some time in the sun this week, including the CBI and CIT.
With all teams done with their seasons,, the pace for coaching vacancies to get filled will pick up this week. It certainly did just that Monday, as four more schools named and/or introduced new coaches.
The underdogs are alive and well in the college basketball postseason. One just has to look a little bit beyond the NCAA Tournament to find them.
